The modern city of Hakusan was established on February 1, 2005, from the merger of the city of Mattō, and the towns of Mikawa and Tsurugi, and the villages Kawachi, Oguchi, Shiramine, Torigoe and Yoshinodani (all from Ishikawa District). As of April 1, 2008 population data, the city has an estimated population of 110,654 and a population density of 147 persons per km². The total area is 755.17 km².
